We don’t live our lives to play better golf. We play golf to live better lives.
Golf is more than a sport. More than a leisure activity. Golf accelerates relationships, benefits mental health, and gives the subconscious brain space to solve problems. LinkUp’s purpose is to enable members to tap into these powers of golf.
Relationships
Golf creates the conditions under which relationships naturally accelerate. Humans bond through storytelling, side-by-side activities, and the release of oxytocin, serotonin, and vasopressin. Golf naturally assists with each.
Storytelling - The beautiful and peaceful natural environments of excellent golf courses and the pockets of time for conversation a round of golf provides enable conversations and storytelling that Zoom calls, business meetings, and networking events usually don’t.
Side by side activities - all pack animals, humans included, express trust and affinity by allowing a pack member on their side. Think of the things humans do side by side. Hunting, cooking, praying, eating, sleeping. When two pack animals confront each other face to face, the amygdala’s fight, flight, freeze or fornicate brain processes take over and the neocortex processes are deemphasized. The next time you are trying to coach a child or co-worker, try this. Instead of talking to them face to face, sit by their side and notice the different path and impact of the discussion. In golf, players are side by side in the cart, walking up the fairway, and standing on the green. The foursome moves like a pack of wolves from hole to hole and a non-verbal bonding dance occurs, whether the players are aware of it or not.
Oxytocin, serotonin, and vasopressin - there’s a bi-directional relationship between emotions and neuropeptides released in the brain. The most important to bonding are oxytocin, which promotes the feeling of connectedness and acceptance, serotonin, which promotes a feeling of safety and calm, and vasopressin, which is the "loyalty and commitment under pressure" neuropeptide. It is particularly powerful for men, as it drives bonding through shared challenges, teamwork, and defending a group or partner. Throughout a round of golf, all of these neuropeptides are released and bonding can be greatly accelerated.

Mental Health
Stress can’t find you on the golf course…unless you create it. Golf is a 4.5 hour break from the constant bombardment of stressors that come to people through their phones, computers, and interruptions. That’s why one of our four rules is “Be present. Stay off your phone”. Give yourself a break from stressors to allow your mental balance to recover. Be present for the people you play with. You will both feel better after focusing on a challenging game played in a collaborative (not competitive) atmosphere on a stunningly beautiful course. That’s why LinkUps are played only at exceptionally beautiful courses.
Subconscious breakthroughs
The creative problem solving power of the brain is awesome, but it works more prolifically in the subconscious mind, and the subconscious mind needs “downtime” from distractions and stress to come up with these breakthroughs. That’s why people experience great ideas when they wake up, in the shower, in the gym, surfing, sailing, etc. The conscious brain either shuts off or is allowed to focus on simple and pleasant tasks, which gives the subconscious mind the bandwidth it needs to focus. In golf, while your conscious brain is thinking about the next shot or chatting with your friend, the subconscious brain is whirling away unfettered and undistracted. You might not get an epiphany immediately or every time. The brain doesn’t conform to deadlines. But, if you give your brain enough space to process, it will come up with answers. Golf is a great provider of space for your brain to do it’s thing.
LinkUp didn’t invent any of this. It has been true for as long as golf has existed. LinkUp’s purpose is to enable members to fully leverage these benefits of golf by bringing the right people to the right venues, with the right formats and culture to enable golf to improve the lives of our members.
